60 years back in Time : Back to Hijli Jail

CURFEW after 11 pm on the streets of IIT Kharagpur – Reason – The whims of the director of IIT Kharagpur need to be satisfied irrespective of the any consequences.

Jawahar Lal Nehru at the time of establishment of IIT Kharagpur said “Here as I stand in this place and my mind inevitably goes back to that infamous institution, for which this place became famous, not now but 20 or 30 years ago – the Hijli Detention Camp. Here in the place of that Hijli Detention Camp stands this fine monument of India, representing India’s urges, India’s future in the making. This picture seems to be symbolic of changes that are coming to India.”. The statement is one which makes every KGPian symbolize him as an emblem of India’s urges towards a bright future. What exactly is the future of India?

There is question that looms large in my mind which could solve the purpose of all discussion here. What do we want from IITs? Do we want technicians who know the know how of every machine or do we want people who could lead the country to a better future. If latter is the case then I am very sorry to inform our very own Prof. Damodar Acharya that with fear comes failure and with freedom comes triumph. The entire IIT system is being more and more mechanized. The elite brains of the country due to the various changing patterns have to rely on coaching centers to get into IIT. They lead a life of restriction before coming to IIT and IIT which was the platform where open thoughts where to come, free opinions were to be developed, new ideas were to emerge is again on the verge of further mechanization where our messiah(DIRO) is trying to curb the life of KGPian. The freedom to thought, to act was to bring out the geniuses from them, and when this freedom is taken away I see a very dull future that lies ahead of KGP.

The activities in the institute like Kshitij, SF, HTDS, ETDS, TDS and all other societies that have been helping the students gain an experience of life will stop. Te dullness of Kharagpur would prevail over KGP. The entire difference between KGP and Kharagpur would vanish.

This is the time to rise, the time when we have to take the step forward to show the institute that it is not Hijli Detention Camp but the symbol of India’s urges, India’s future that they are dealing with. We need to break the prison we need to break free and the time to realize has come. “Fear can hold you prisoner, Hope can set you free”. If we do not have a say about our freedom then I must say that the elite brains of India do lack something. Stand by your freedom, stand by yourself, and stand by your fellow mates…. Make your point heard……… make yourself loud enough by being together….. When 4000 IITians speak the world would listen.

Prove to yourself if not to anyone else that you are an IITian and not every other boy who cannot make even valid arguments heard.

Try to be yourself for once at least for your freedom, at least for yourself.

Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.

So finally we get what we want. Friends hail the student power…. it is done … the tution fee hike on the non fresher batches has been removed.

This blog has been a testimony to the student unity. Over 2000 endorsements in 3 days. It’s a moment to rejoice. The way our student fraternity reacted to something wrong. We got awesome support from the alumni who congratulated and promised to help this initiative. Student power has been witnessed.

The student at IIT Kharagpur has shown its concern on a genuine issue finally.

For the people who though nothing could be done this has been a testimony to the fact ki “we can together make a difference”, however trifle it might be. This shows that tomorrow when we need it, we can see from the support we got that the students wont be found lacking the courage to stand up and ask pointed questions.

The fees has still been hiked from 26k to 32 k. Just as we have shown concern here, we should try and see what has prompted this hike. we should be equally concerned with what happens to the Gymkhana fees and HMC fees. why is the condition of our toilets and halls pathetic? and every issue that we feel is wrong.

The clearance of C.N.R. Rao Committee’s recommendation to double the fees in all existing IITs by Ministry of HRD, almost all the IITs are set to implement the hike. The most intellectual brains will now have to spend almost double for getting admissions into the best engineering institute in India. Not only is this alarming them, but the fact that the IITs are still not unanimous on the procedure to be followed to implement such a hike. Each IIT has a different plan set in mind.

The oldest , the largest and the most diversified of all IITs, IIT Kharagpur is still finding it hard to fix the exact fees. Initially, the fees to be paid at time of registration by general category students , was fixed at Rs. 25600. Immediately after getting clearance for the increase, the institute raised it to approximately Rs. 28000 . All of a sudden , the fees was found out to be Rs 32275 and this Monday i.e. 07.07.08, another circular came in revising the fees to Rs. 43275 , paving way for a hike of Rs. 17,675 per semester or Rs. 35,350 per year, almost doubling the fees. Students are fearing a further rise in the fees.

However, if we talk about other IITs then IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur are also raising their fees but the hike sought their will only be for the fresh entering batches and as of now no circulars have been issued indicating a fee-rise for already studying students.

For IIT Kharagpur students, the most grueling aspect of this decision is that the students who have already been in the institute for last 2-3 years will also now have to bear the brunt. The educational loans they had applied for earlier from the banks were sanctioned against the initial fees. But now the banks are refusing to sanction the new amount and are of the opinion that they would only be able to pay in the amounts fixed earlier. It shall be really a shameful incident for the nation if some monetarily poor intellect, would have to discontinue education only on the grounds of inability to arrange for the fees.

It is not that the sharpest brains are unable to understand the problem faced by IITs. IITB has declared that it is on the verge of bankruptcy. But what is aggrieving them the most is that they have suddenly been informed amidst their course, that they have to pay double their fees. If this decision from IIT Kharagpur would have come in for the incoming batch only, it would not have been much of a problem. But implementing the hike for all students, when other iits are abstaining from it, is sure to raise some eyebrows!

The IITians have been the most silent lot and have never been involved into any kind of protests or processions. Even at time of reservations, they remained unexpectedly calm. But this decision of Mr. Arjun and counterparts has surely aggravated their inner self. And a protest may be in the pipelines!!
